A collection of symphonies by Ivan Stankovych (1942), one of Ukraines leading contemporary composers. Symphony No. 1, Sinfonia Larga, written in 1973, foreshadows Shostakovich and features a free-flowing, swirling interplay of sounds. Symphony No. 2, Heroic, composed in 1975, is a large-scale work featuring an expanded percussion section. The Symphony No. 4, Sinfonia Lirica, composed in 1977, belongs to the neo-Romantic school and evokes a quiet world reminiscent of Scriabin. A compelling performance by the now-well-known conductor Theodor Kuchar. Recorded in Kyiv in 1995. (C)RS
