Haydns 40-year dedication to reforming the symphonic genre played a major role in establishing the symphony as the most important form in orchestral music. Haydn composed his first symphony at the age of 25 and completed his final group of symphonies in London during the 1790s. The four symphonies recorded on this CD were written during Haydns early years in the service of the Esterhzy familythat is, his early periodand are rarely performed.
