“Macbeth” is an opera by Giuseppe Verdi (18131901) that premiered at the Teatro Pergola in Florence when he was 33 years old; it is his 10th opera overall. It was revised for its 1865 performance in Paris, and this 2007 production is also based on the 1865 version. Although this was Verdis first work based on a Shakespeare play, it does not detract from the brilliance of the original; in particular, the portrayal of Macbeths ambition and inner turmoil, as well as the eloquent characterization of Lady Macbeth, is exceptional. Featuring the promising young baritone Altomare in the title role, this performance is brimming with youthful energy from start to finish.
