He received his early education in London and studied music under Cramer and Dussek. He later returned to Paris, where, in 1792, he was deeply influenced by an opera by Meyereau. He studied composition under Reich, who was renowned in Paris, and it was there that he composed numerous chamber music works and made a name for himself. The three cello sonatas included here were completed in 1820 and published in Paris the following year. They possess such a high degree of artistry that they are often compared to Beethovens sonatas, and their classical forms are imbued with captivating sounds.
