Ivo Gurney, a composer who studied at Stanford and was a close friend of Herbert Howells, is also known as a great poet for his many poetic works, including two collections of poems based on his experiences serving in World War I. He suffered from bipolar disorder throughout his life, his health deteriorated due to the war, and he ultimately died of tuberculosis; the dark shadow that hung over his life seems to be reflected in his music as well, as each of his more than 300 art songs carries a somber tone.
