For this release, Karel Soukenk has remastered classic recordings from DG and Philips using the original sources for SACD. Not only are these all extraordinary performances, but the recording of Pictures at an Exhibition with the Berlin Philharmonicwhich has long been difficult to findis a particularly welcome addition. The sound quality is hard to believe for a 1953 recording, and the sound, strongly influenced by Furtwngler, is fascinating. Furthermore, the Mussorgsky songs, sung by the renowned soprano Vishnevskaya at the age of 36 with her resonant, beautiful voice, are simply breathtaking.
