BCJ’s second release of Bach’s Lutheran Masses is a SACD hybrid disc of Bach and Peranda’s Masses. Bach Collegium Japan’s second release of Lutheran Masses features Bach’s Mass in A major, BWV 234, Mass in F major, BWV 233, and Marco Giuseppe Peranda’s Mass in A minor. Bach’s Mass in A major, BWV 234, completed in Leipzig around 1737, is a masterpiece with a pastoral atmosphere in which only two flutes are used for the wind part. The Mass in F major, BWV233, on the other hand, is a revision of “Kyrie-Christ, O Lamb of God,” BWV233a, which is said to have been written in the Weimar period, and the movements of the Gloria are all adaptations of the old work.
