This is the 13th collection of works by Sousa (1854-1932), a NAXOS favorite. Of course, there are many rare works in this collection. For example, the overture to his first operetta “Catherine,” composed in 1879. The overture to “Mother Goose,” composed in 1883, is a patchwork of lullabies from his childhood. Tracks 5 and 6 are marches for the 20th President of the United States, James Garfield. Sousa wrote the commemorative march when he was inaugurated as president on March 4, 1881. He must not have imagined that a few months later he would write a funeral march. As usual, Keith Bryon gives a convincing performance, from songs that reflect such a worldly situation to those that are truly enjoyable. Naxos Japan
