Bizet’s opera “Carmen” was a failure when first performed on March 3, 1875. Today, however, it is one of the most popular operas in the world. After the premiere, Bizet was offered a tour of Vienna, but on June 4 of the same year, Bizet, who had always been sickly, died suddenly. (It is known that after his death, his friend Ernesto Giraud revised the work, and it was performed in Vienna.) Guiraud also created this suite, which is an impressive work, taking music from the opera, which is full of beautiful melodies, in all directions. Guiraud’s originality in placing the famous opening section of the “Prelude” as a separate “Bullfighter” at the end of the first suite adds to the overall tension of the suite.
