Gould, then 24 years old, became the first North American pianist to visit the Soviet Union after World War II. It is well known that his debut recital in Moscow on May 7, 1957, began with many empty seats, but by the end of the first half, word had spread like wildfire, and by the time the performance ended, the venue was packed with an ecstatic audience. In addition to the Moscow recital, this film interweaves rare footage and recordings from his recitals and lecture-concerts in Leningrad with testimonies from Ashkenazy, Rostropovich, and others, revealing the profound impact Gould had on the Russian music world.
