Matthias Goerne, one of the finest baritones of our time, performs Bach’s solo cantatas. The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra plays the role of orchestrator, and the program includes the Oboe d’Amore Concerto and the Sinfonia from the cantata. Cantata No. 56, a widely known masterpiece, is about a life filled with suffering that can only be redeemed by reaching the peaceful harbor of death. The prelude consists of the motives “Cross” and “Sigh,” followed by the five-part first movement with a baritone solo, and the final chorale with a chorus at the end, all of which showcase Bach’s creativity and fullness of writing.
