Leonid Kogan + Mackerras: The Fabulous Beethoven LiveLeonid Kogan (1924-1982)’s style is in sharp contrast to that of his predecessor, Oistrakh. In contrast to Oistrakh, who boasts of a full and plump tone and figure, Kogan’s tone is sharp, sharpened, and glistening, as if in earnest. This is a live performance three years after the studio recording with Silvestri. The sound quality is surprisingly good. The timpani at the beginning are beautiful, like deep falling snow, and the corgan soars as if it were flying in the sky.
