In the tradition of Schubert and Schumann, Brahms was one of the leading figures in the development of German lieder (song) in the 19th century. During his lifetime, Brahms wrote some 300 songs, many of which were based on German folk songs. Included in this album are 35 songs from the first five collections of “49 German Folk Songs,” one of the latter’s major works. The songs are based on melodies from the “German Folk Songs” compiled by German linguists Anton Wilhelm Zuccarmario and Andreas Kretschmer, with Brahms’ brilliant piano accompaniment, and are divided into themes such as love, lament, humor, and sorrow.
