This album reflects a new vision of the concerto in mid-20th century England. Walton’s Sinfonia Concertante was originally conceived as ballet music, but after being rejected by Diaghilev, it was adapted as a concert work at the suggestion of his friend Constant Lambert. It is considered an important early work in which Walton’s own personal style was established, while the influence of Stravinsky, Poulenc, and others can be felt. Britten’s “Divisions” was commissioned by Paul Wittgenstein, a left-handed pianist who lost his right arm in World War I. Written in variation form, each variation explores a different technique. Tippett’s “Piano Concerto,” inspired by Gieseking’s performance of Beethoven’s Fourth Concerto, explores lyrical melody rather than technical virtuosity.
