This boxed set commemorates the 40th anniversary of the ORFEO label, established in Munich in 1979, with a generous collection of masterpieces by the great masters of the label’s history. In particular, Beethoven’s 250th anniversary year is celebrated with an outstanding lineup, including Carlos Kleiber’s Symphony No. 4, the face of the label, as well as Knappertsbusch’s “Hero,” Klemperer’s No. 7, and Karajan’s Ninth Symphony, all of which can be considered superdreadful. Richard Strauss by Bhm, Furtwngler’s “Romantic” (revised by Lwe), Bruckner No. 5 by Savarisch, Brahms No. 2 by Barbirolli, “Pathetique” by Filitschai, Prokofiev No. 5 by Mitropoulos, etc. are all from the Bavarian Radio.
