In May and June of 1965, the Cell + Cleveland Orchestra undertook a large-scale European tour that included the Soviet Union. What a spectacular live performance at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam! Cell was such a familiar figure there that he had even served as co-conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Consequently, he was thoroughly familiar with the acoustics of this world-renowned concert hall. His performance was brimming with confidence, as if to say, I will master the essence of European music using the American orchestra I nurtured.
