Webers (17861826) Holy Mass No. 1 is, for some reason, commonly referred to as the Der Freischtz Mass, but in reality, it has no connection whatsoever to that famous opera. It was premiered in 1818, on the name day of King Augustus Frederick I of Saxony, with Weber himself conducting. It is believed that, likely in an effort to raise the works profile, someone later attached the title of Webers masterpiece, *Der Freischtz*, to it and promoted it under that name. The work is truly magnificent, and the solo parts are as dazzling as those in an opera. This performance by Horst Stein is highly acclaimed as a revival of a little-known work.
