Schneiders oratorio The Last Judgment, long forgotten, has been rediscovered in Leipzig! Schneider was a composer and organist who served as court music director in Dessau. He enjoyed great renown during his active career and was known as an exceptionally creative figure in the musical world of central Germany; this The Last Judgment was once considered one of the most famous oratorios in Germany, but it was completely forgotten after the composers death. The music, which draws on texts from the Book of Revelation and the Gospel of Matthew, accurately depicts the scene of the Last Judgment without resorting to explanatory words. Gregor Mayers performance here is based on a critically edited version of the full score discovered in Leipzig, and it is sure to provide an opportunity for new discoveries about the composer.Naxos Japan
