While Salonen has previously composed piano and violin concertos, this marks his first cello concerto. It features a contemporary style, incorporating the 12-tone technique, the use of ethnic percussion instruments, and the looping of the cello solo part using electronic devices. Ive been mulling over ideas for a cello concerto for 30 years. I actually began composing in 2015, incorporating phrases from a solo piece for cello that I wrote in 2010. Rather than being bound by the traditional concerto form featuring a solo cello and orchestra, I often treat the o
