Henzes *The Prince of Homburg*, often regarded as a classic of modern opera, is a three-act work based on the original story by Heinrich von Kleist. It addresses the weighty themestill relevant todayof the conflict between an individuals decisions and the judgment of the law. Henze remarked, While searching for words that could bring something new out of my music, I came across *The Prince of Humburg* by my friend von Kleist. Who else but he could have written such a libretto? The themes of the conflict between individual decisions and the raison dtre (the states raison dtre), issues of law and order, and human beings trembling before the immense power of the ruling authorities are all things that could happen today, and could just as easily have happened a thousand or two thousand years ago.
