Andreas (Andrzej) Hakenberger was a composer active from the late 16th century to the early 17th century. While records show that he worked as a lute player at the court of King Sigismund III of Poland around 1602, nothing is known about his childhood or early youth prior to that time. In 1607, upon learning of a vacancy for a musician at the Lutheran St. Marys Church in Gdask, Poland, Hakenberger submitted his own musical scores to the city council as part of his application. He was appointed chapel master in 1608 and served in that position until his death. The motets included in this album are works from the Pelplin Tablature, a collection of vocal music by various composers written between 1620 and 1680. They conform to both Catholic and Lutheran doctrines and and are written in an elaborate and brilliant style based on the Italian school studied at the court of Sigismund III.Naxos Japan
