First performed at La Scala, Milan in 1845, “Giovanna d’Arco” was Verdi’s seventh opera, written at the age of thirty-one and based on Schiller’s play “The Maid of Orleans”. It tells the story of Joan of Arc, the young woman who led the French army to victory in the Hundred Years’ War and lost her life in the end. The libretto was poorly received at the time, and the work languished until its revival in 1951. The venue is the Teatro Farnese, famous for its unusually wide stage. One of the oldest theatres in Europe, it is built of wood and was created for a Medici princess who married into the Farnese family. D
