To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of 20th century British composer Arthur Bliss, live recordings of him conducting his own works are now available. According to the label, this is the first time all of them have been released, so fans are in for a treat. The “Symphony of Colors” is Bliss’s masterpiece. The “Piano Concerto” was inspired by the performances of young people he met when he was a member of the piano jury at the Isa Competition (now the Elisabeth Competition), and was written as a commission for the New York World’s Fair (1939). The march “Phoenix” is dedicated to France during the Second World War.
