Composer Ross Lee Finney studied in Europe under Alban Berg and Nadia Boulanger, and upon returning to the United States, taught at the University of Michigan while pursuing his compositional work. His style clearly bears the influence of Berg’s 12-tone technique. His three short pieces for strings, winds, percussion, and tape are intriguing, anticipating the style of mixing acoustic orchestral music with electronic sound that became prevalent at France’s IRCAM in the 1990s and beyond. His Symphony No. 4 is a major, expressionistic work heavily influenced by Berg. Tobushji Co., Ltd.
