It is known that there are at least four versions of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 2. Although the final revision was made in 1892, the version most frequently performed today is the first draft from 1872 (edited by William Carraggan in 2005), which features the scherzo as the second movement and the adagio as the third. The Adagio movement originally derives its form from the third movement of Beethovens Ninth Symphony, and performing it in this order further evokes Beethoven. It is also said that the horn solo with its many leaps, which appears in the coda of this movement, was often difficult for performers of that era to execute. As with his other works, Bolton brings out the charm of this piece through an approach that emphasizes simplicity.Naxos Japan
