The Melos Quartett’s Mozart recordings gathered together for the first timeThe Melos Quartett was founded in 1965 by principal players of the Wrttemberg Chamber Orchestra and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. The founding members were Wilhelm Melcher (1940-2005), first violin, Gerhard Voss (b. 1939), second violin, Hermann Voss (b. 1934), viola, and Peter Buck (b. 1937), cello. Melcher studied with Erich Rhn and Pina Carmirelli, the Voss brothers with Sndor Vgh, and Buck with Ludwig Hoelscher. The name “Melos” combines the “Mel” of Melcher with the “os” of Voss, playing on the Latin melos, meaning “song” or “melody”.With an average age of just 28, the players won high praise from the outset.
