Hartmut Henchen was born in Dresden in 1943. He has visited Japan on numerous occasions and is well-known for his meticulous interpretations of the German and Austrian repertoire, including works by Mahler (18601911) and Mendelssohn. He made his conducting debut at the Berlin State Opera, where he conducted Mussorgskys *Boris Godunov* to great acclaim. He has made numerous guest appearances at the Dresden State Opera, in Amsterdam, and with the Berlin Philharmonic, and has served as music director of the Dresden Music Festival since 2002. He excels particularly in his ability to command large ensembles, and in this recording of Mahlers Symphony No. 8, he precisely captures the works immense scale and festive atmosphere, portraying Mahlers true intent with a flawless structure.
