[An Intimate Interpretation at the Mantua Court Chapel: Exploring Monteverdis Sources of Inspiration]In 1610, shortly before Monteverdia master of the early Baroquetook up his post as Kapellmeister at St. Marks Basilica in Venice and began to exert his immense influence, he published a collection of works that could be described as the culmination of his church music techniques. Included in this collection was the music for Vespers, known today as *Vespers of the Blessed Virgin Mary*. At the time, the composer was still in Mantua, northern Italy, and it is believed that the majority of this collection was written for the private devotions of the Gonzaga family.
