The works for violin and piano that Schubert composed between 1816 and 1827 represent a crucial milestone in the composers creative evolution, yet they have historically been underappreciated. The three early sonatas were regarded as simple pieces intended for amateurs and were titled Sonatinas by Anton Diabelli at the time of their publication; meanwhile, the late Fantasiasnow celebrated for their originalitywere criticized at their premiere for their technical complexity.
