Although Handel (16851759) composed numerous suites for keyboard instruments, they are, unfortunately, not very well known today. However, the so-called Eight Great Suites, composed in 1720 and included here, are unquestionably masterpieces by Handel. Some listeners may recognize the finale of Suite No. 5, HWV 430, as The Cheerful Blacksmith, but the other pieces are equally splendid. With its exquisitely refined counterpoint and innovative forms that break with tradition, while incorporating Italian-style, elegant musical ideas, this is a thoroughly rewarding album. This album features Movements 1 through 4 of the First Suite. While some may take issue with the use of the piano to perform Handels works, this elegant sound is well worth a listen.Naxos Japan
