There was a film of the same name produced in 1960 and directed by Richard Brooks (with music by Andr Previn). It tells the story of a con artist who has lived his life by the power of his words, who infiltrates a religious group for impure motives and, of all things, ends up standing before people as an evangelist to preach. However, it was only a matter of time before his past was exposed. The story culminated in him losing the woman he loved and setting out on a new journey. While this opera follows the same basic plot, I feel that the humanity of the characters is portrayed with even greater depth.
