August Stradal is known for his arrangements of Liszts and Wagners orchestral works, as well as Bruckners symphonies, into brilliant piano solo versions. He was a student of Liszt and, like his teacher, held J.S. Bach in high regard. Of course, he did not limit himself to studying Bachs works; he was also interested in the works of Baroque-era composers. In particular, Buxtehudes organ pieces, edited by Philipp Spitta in 1876, became Stradals primary source of inspiration, and he decided to arrange several of them for solo piano. To arrange Buxtehudes organ pieceswhich are written with extreme precision and technical sophisticationfor the piano, it was necessary to reorganize the parts and, at times, reduce them; however, the completed works have been transformed into magnificent piano pieces without losing any of Buxtehudes brilliance.Naxos Japan
