A Stunning Symphony in Which the Wagner Tuba Resounds MajesticallyChristopher Rouse (1949) is one of the most prolific American composers working today. His creative focus lies in large-scale orchestral works, characterized by an analog-style approach. Although Symphony No. 1 is, of course, a contemporary work, it is brimming with 19th-century elements; its main theme derives from the Adagio of Bruckners Seventh Symphony, and the anachronistic use of four Wagner tubas lends it a stylish touch. The performance shines thanks to the clarinet playing of the renowned Swedish virtuoso Frst and the excellent conducting of Alan Gilbert, a familiar figure in Japan.
