Shostakovichs Final Symphony and a New Edition of a MasterpieceShostakovichs Symphony No. 9 was sketched during the very end of his life, but because he had become paralyzed on one side due to repeated strokes and wrote it with his impaired left hand, the manuscript was considered illegible. At the request of his widow, Alexander Laskatov deciphered and reconstructed the manuscript. While there is a Davis recording on Universal, Hughess interpretation is equally compelling. This is the world premiere recording of an intriguing version of Shostakovichs Concerto Grosso No. 1one of his masterpiecesfeaturing added flute and oboe parts.
