The story begins in a Parisian restaurant. While the young painter Giorgio (who is actually a prince of a certain country) is chatting with friends, a simple girl named Marcella appears, having fled from a mob in pursuit. The two fall in love and leave Paris to live a life together. However, Giorgios homeland was suffering under a tyrannical regime, and its people were in distress. Upon hearing this, Giorgio resolved to return to his homeland, and the two decided to part ways with heavy hearts. Late 19th-century Italian opera was at the height of Verismo (realism). There was a tendency to draw on familiar, tabloid-like incidents as subject matter. However, Giordano and Puccini composed beautiful works that adhered to tradition.
