Composed as a grand opera for the Paris Opera, *I Suoni della Sera in Sicilia* (The Bells of Sicily) draws on the real-life massacre of French settlers that took place on the island of Sicily under French rule in the late 13th century, depicting the conflict between intense human emotions and the political situation. Director Christoph Loy has transposed the setting to the 1940s, a time when violence suddenly came to dominate society. Although this opera is typically performed in Italian, this production adopts the French version, and the ballet *The Four Seasons* is incorporated as an element to further bring this tragic drama to life.
