Franz Joseph Aumann was born in 1728 in Traismauer, Austria. He studied music in Vienna, where he met some of the eras leading musicians. He moved to St. Florian in 1753, was ordained a priest a few years later, and served at the monastery until his death in 1797. His surviving works are by no means numerous, and his chamber music is particularly rare. These are sophisticated works of entertainment composed as occasional music, featuring pairs of violins and violas engaging in lively, equal dialogue, while trumpets (clarinos) and timpani heighten the heroic and sacred atmosphere, and while the brilliant recorder (flute) takes a concertante role; the use of instrum
