This recording was made to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the birth of Italian composer Maria Teresa Agnesi. At the time of its composition, the opera *Sophonisba* does not appear to have been performed; although she herself sent the score to opera houses in the hope that it would be staged, this apparently never came to pass.Judging by the lyrics, it appears the work was written with Vittoria Tesia singer popular in Vienna at the timein mind; however, while there is evidence of unofficial performances, it does not seem to have ever been staged at an opera house. However, precisely because the aria was written with one of the most popular singers of the era in mind, it has turned out to be a compelling work that at times demands technically challenging vocal performance.Tokyo M-Plus
