The four works by J.S. Bach, BWV 1066 through 1069, commonly referred to as Orchestral Suites.It is said that Bach himself did not call these works suites, but rather referred to them as works beginning with a French-style overture. According to recent research, it is believed that these works were composed much earlier than previously assumed, during Bachs Weimar and Kthen periods; it has also been suggested that the trumpets and timpani indicated in the scores may have been added later for performances in Leipzig. Although the autograph scores have been lost, Mortensen performs these works in their original versions, reflecting the latest research findings, presenting them as suites for small ensemblesas Bach likely originally intended.
