Rigoletto” is one of Verdi’s most popular operas of the mid-period, represented by the popular aria “Song of a Woman’s Heart” sung in the play. This tragic opera is based on Victor Hugo’s play “The King is Pleased”. The Duke of Mantova is a young philanderer with money and power. Rigoletto, a clown in the service of the Duke, is asked to kill the Duke’s only daughter, Gilda, whom he loves dearly, because she has been played for a fool. The production is directed by Riccardo Frizza, who is well known to Japanese audiences and is active not only in Italy but also in other parts of the world, and directed by Monique Wagemakers from Holland.
