It has been said that J. S. Bachs *The Well-Tempered Clavier* is, if Beethovens complete set of 32 piano sonatas is considered the New Testament of the piano, then this work is truly the Old Testament of the piano. The Swiss pianist Etwin Fischer (18861960), known for his collaborations with Furtwngler and his renowned book *To a Friend Who Loves Music*, undertook the first-ever complete recording of this Old Testament in the 1930s. and it is hailed as a monumental achievement in the history of Bach performance, on par with Casals Unaccompanied works and Schweitzers organ pieces. Volume 1 of the two-volume set is included in this album.
