A hard-to-find 1985 live recording from the Vienna State Opera, “The Clown,” conducted by Adam Fischer and sung by Placido Domingo, has been restored. This production was one of the last productions Jean-Pierre Poner directed at the Vienna State Opera, and Domingo’s flawless performance caused a sensation. Domingo captivated the audience with his incomparable voice and expressive performance, making this opera very compelling. The other singers were also excellent, with Kotrbasz skillfully portraying Nedda’s inner conflicts, Schne as Silvio singing the interloper with a youthful voice, and Zednik giving Peppe a new character with his unique voice. Manughera also played the fearsome Tonio. Adam Fischer also gave a breakthrough performance to round out the whole ensemble.Naxos Japan
