While many conductors showcase their piano skills, its quite rare to hear them play the clarinet. Before making his breakthrough as a conductor, Vanska was a virtuoso who served as principal clarinetist of the Turku Philharmonic from 1971 to 1976 and the Helsinki Philharmonic from 1977 to 1987; he reportedly still practices regularly to this day. Its only natural that, given that its a work by Aho, he would want to participate as a clarinetist as welland his virtuosity is truly astonishing.
