Hovhannes, a pioneer of American contemporary music, sought to fuse East and West, ancient and modern, and created a wholly unique worldone in which his music could be described as the very resonance of all things in the universe. He was such a towering figure that it is no exaggeration to say that the subsequent Minimalist movementas well as composers like Prt and Rautavaara, who are still celebrated todayare all extensions of his legacy. Just before turning 30, Hovhannes discarded nearly a thousand of his own compositions; one of the few pieces he retained was his Cello Concerto. This album features the world premiere recording with the internationally renowned virtuoso Starker. Symphony No. 22, which depicts a city of the imagination, is conducted by the composer himself.
