Andr Tchaikovsky (1935-1982) is more often heard in recent years as a composer. This name is a stage name for Western Europe, and his real name is Robert Anjay Krauthammer, a Polish citizen born in Warsaw. When World War II broke out at an early age, he assumed the name Andrzej Czaikowski in order to conceal his Jewish background. After World War II, he resumed piano studies and studied at the Paris Conservatory with the famous teacher Lazare-Levy. He won the eighth prize at the legendary 1955 Chopin Concours (first prize went to Adam Harasiewicz, second to Vladimir Ashkenazy, and third to Hu Tsung), which was of an exceptionally high standard, and thereafter was based in Paris and London, where he died of colon cancer at age 46. There were various commercial recordings, but few of them are available on CD. This German broadcast recording from his late 20s is valuable.
