Held in concert halls and historic buildings across Europe, it is an annual tradition with a more serious programme than the orchestra’s Waldbhne concerts. The 2017 edition took place in the Republic of Cyprus, with Mariss Jansons conducting and the Berliner Philharmoniker’s principal clarinettist Andreas Ottensamer as soloist. The open-air stage was built at Paphos Castle. Paphos, a World Heritage site whose ruins span the ancient Greek and Roman periods through to Byzantine times, is also known as the birthplace of Aphrodite, and was a European Capital of Culture in 2017.
