In 1841, Adam achieved great success with *Giselle*, which premiered in France. The following year, he created *The Beautiful Daughter of Ghent*, which, unlike his previous work featuring fairies and fantastical worlds, told an extremely realistic story centered on Beatrice, a young woman living in Ghent, and her fianc, Benedict. Based on a libretto by Saint-Georges for *The Beautiful Daughter of Pelt*, this ballet follows Beatrice, who falls for a marquis despite being engaged to be married; her father, who tries to bring her back; and the marquis, whose attention is drawn to another dancer and who uses Beatrice as collateral for his debts These characters set off a series of tragic events That is the plot.
