William Walton was one of the leading composers of 20th-century Britain. After achieving success with *Faade* in 1922, he composed numerous works, including orchestral pieces, choral works, and film scores, but in 1948, he moved with his wife, Susanna Gill, to the picturesque Italian island of Ischia. It was in this beautiful setting that he composed his Cello Concerto. At the time, Walton was in contact with the renowned cellist Gregor Piatigorsky; this piece was commissioned by him, and Walton received various suggestions and advice from Piatigorsky to help refine the work. Walton himself considered it the best of his three concertos for strings. On this recording, you can hear the version arranged for viola by violist Serova.
