Juan Bautista Cansino was a composer born around 1826 in Mlaga, Spain. Records indicate that he served as organist at the Mlaga Cathedral for many years, but little else is known about him.This Stabat Mater was premiered in 1854. The people of Mlaga, who had endured a long period of instabilityincluding the great yellow fever epidemic of 1803, the French invasion, and civil warsought solace in the music performed regularly at the cathedral. Although this beautiful work had been completely forgotten since its premiere, it was revived in January 2020 by the Mlaga Philharmonic Orchestra with the support of the Fundacin Lgrimas y Favores, a foundation promoted by the renowned actor Antonio Banderas.The performance featured some of Spains leading singers; among them, the renowned baritone Carlos lvarez is said to have been deeply captivated by this piece.
