A stereo recording exists of Toscaninis masterpiece among masterpieces, the 1951 Verdi: Requiem! That said, it wasnt recorded in stereo from the start; rather, it resulted from the coincidence that microphones were set up in two locations simultaneously. Since the right and left channels were recorded on different recorders, there are naturally some unstable sections due to the mixing process; however, the recording beautifully captures the expansive, expressive woodwinds, the lustrous virtuosity of the strings, and the singers majestic performances. The quality is more than sufficient for appreciating the artistry.
